Mini Bio of Thomas Cole


Thomas Cole was born on February 1, 1801 in Bolton, Lancashire, England. His family immigrated to the United States in 1818 settling in Steubenville, Ohio. Cole learned the essentials of his profession from a nomadic portrait painter named Stein. Because he was as successful in painting his portraits, he moved to Pittsburgh in 1823, next to Philadelphia in 1824 where he attended Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts as well as rejoining with his parents and sister in New York City in early 1825.

During his arrival to New York, he sold five paintings to George W. Bruen. After that he displayed five more painting in the window of a book store and soon another person bought it and lent it to the American Academy of Fine Arts. At this point Cole was well known for his romantic art. He was known for his landscape painting. Not too long after his fame period, he continued to produce sketches which soon added up to more than two thousand-five hundred sketches. These were put in The Detroit Institute of Arts.

Thomas Cole died on February 11, 1848 at Catskill. The fourth highest peak in Catskill is now named after Cole, Thomas Cole Mountain in his honor. Cedar Grove is known as Thomas Cole’s House, which was declared a National Historic Site in 1999 and is still open to the public.
